Golf Academy of America at Torrey Pines for Farmers PGA event
Feb 7, 2011
Beautiful Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Cal. received a four-day visit by its neighbors at Golf Academy of America recently, but the legendary course--host of the 2008 U.S. Open--hardly seemed to mind the lengthy stay. After all, some of the biggest names in golf came for the long weekend, too.
It was Watson, Mickelson, and Vegas who left La Jolla with the big money, but the real winners of the Farmers Insurance Open were members of the gallery. They enjoyed the warm southern California weather while back east, a deep freeze slowed life to a crawl.
The warm weather made the Golf Academy of America tent a perfect hangout. The school (whose San Diego campus is only 25 miles away) provided golf tees and gift bags to thousands who attended the event, the fourth PGA tournament of the year.
After Sunday's tournament wrap, Golf Academy of America sponsored the "Shot of the Day" on the Golf Channel featuring Rocco Mediate, who birdied the 10th hole with a chip shot.
