SDGA Orlando - Spring Semester 2007

May 3, 2007

The Spring semester at the Orlando campus was packed full of resume building “Special Events”. Orlando is the site of the annual PGA Merchandise Show. Attendance at the Show was offered to all SDGA Orlando students. This three day event is all about the future of the business of golf and our students networked with PGA Professionals, vendors and suppliers from all aspects of the game. Many April grads took advantage of this venue to interview for possible job opportunities.

March in Orlando is focused on the Professional side of golf. The first Arnold Palmer Invitational was played at The Bay Hill Club. Students from second and third semester volunteered to assist the Bay Hill golf shop staff for the entire week of the event. Our students got a “behind the counter” experience that was most special. The volunteer students have the rare opportunity to play Bay Hill this Summer in exchange for their efforts.

The Tavistock Cup, a competition between PGA Tour players from the Isleworth Club and Lake Nona Club, took place at the end of March. Over 60 SDGA Orlando campus students assisted with tournament operations, golf shop merchandising and Food & Beverage activities. Students from 2nd Semester provided a volunteer foundation for the premier two-day event in Professional Golf. In exchange for their efforts the SDGA volunteers will be playing Lake Nona Golf Club this Summer.

March was also the month for the 4th Semester visit to the Golf Channel. Following a tour of the facility the students watched a live presentation of Golf Central. Following Golf Central the students had an opportunity to meet the “on-air” personalities and talk about how the production is put together. Kelly Tillman and Megan West were very informative. A big thanks to Mike Lenninger ( April ’97 Orlando Grad), Golf Channel employee, who hosted the group.

It should also be noted that all of the above efforts led to job opportunities for Orlando students.
