Switching to a Golden Golf Career
Oct 2, 2008
We have heard of many career-oriented people complaining about boring routines in their jobs. If you are one of these people, then a career switch will surely bring you liberation. If you love the game of golf like millions of us, then maybe you should consider having a golf career.
Golf as a game can hardly be underestimated. Some of the highest paid celebrities are professional golf players. Of course, we all know Tiger Woods, and he makes millions of dollars each year playing golf as well as endorsements.
It is not that you quit your job now and follow a certain future where you are in the elite club of players with Tiger Woods. The point here is that while we may not all be like Tiger Woods, we can at least feel what he feels to a certain degree by getting a career in golf.
Golf careers have a wide spectrum of jobs. There are jobs ranging from being a professional player to being a resort manager, or performing maintenance and repair jobs.
Golf as a multi-billion dollar industry can hardly be affected by a recession overall because the types of jobs in the industry vary so widely. In fact, the number of companies that cater to golfing needs is increasing annually at an unbelievable rate.
The Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour and Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour operate big golfing events that can open doors to people wishing to switch to a golf career. But aside from PGA and LPGA Tours, there are other groups that offer the same opportunities for those who wish to play golf for a living.
The question that easily pops up is how to get a head start into the golf industry, especially for those who may not play well enough to make a career out of golf, but still want to work in the industry. In the United States, degrees in golf management are being offered at various school campuses. There are also schools that offer courses on other aspects of golf such as construction and maintenance of golf courses and management of hotels and resorts that cater to golfing vacationers.
The great thing about working in the golf industry is that one will always get exciting experiences each day. Unlike a typical office job where one sits inside an office for 8 hours a day every day, a golf job, in many cases, involves going out into the field once in awhile or everyday depending upon the job position. And frequently, that field is a golf course!
Having a golf career also offers one the opportunity to build a network consisting of interesting and high profile personalities. Many top business executives like to take their breaks playing golf, and a lot of business deals are done on the greens.
And if it is not enough that one is having fun with his or her golf career, the economic status of those involved in the golf industry can be among the highest. If you look around the golfing environment, the lawns are well manicured; it costs millions of dollars to build and maintain a golf course. It can be said that people who regularly play golf are those who can afford it. In short, when you are working in the golf industry, you are most likely exposed to people in the higher echelon economically.
It is never too late to switch to a golf career now. If you want to be a player, buy your equipment and join a club. Read, watch and learn techniques. Or if you want to work on a golf course or resort, obtain the appropriate degree. This is an investment with great returns.
Most importantly, be sure you are passionate about golf. It is easy to fall in love with golf. With a game played amidst fresh air and green sceneries, who would say no? And while working in the golf industry, it would not be hard to learn playing golf. Everyday, your jobs feels as if you are just playing!
