The Left-Handed or Backhanded Golf Swing
Apr 14, 2008

Figure 1
These shots take some practice, but if you happen to be in a position where you can't swing at the ball using your normal right-handed stance (for example, if there's a tree trunk in the way), try hitting the ball left-handed (or right-handed for a lefty) or backhanded.
For the first technique, use your pitching wedge. Stand as you would to hit the shot left-handed, but turn the club over with the toe pointing down (see figure 1). Then, hit the ball using a short backswing.

Figure 2
If that won't work, try standing with your back to the direction of the shot. Then, hold the club with one hand and swing with an up-and-down backward motion (see figure 2).
Even if you move the ball only a few yards using one of these techniques, you'll probably be in a better position than you would have if you had simply opted for an unplayable lie penalty.
