Get behind the ball and note the shininess
of the grass toward the hole.
Learning how to read greens is one way to improve your golf game.
Here's how to tell if the grain of the grass is with you or against you.
From behind the ball, look toward the hole. If the grass looks shiny, then you know the grass is with you and the ball will run more quickly. If the grass is dull, the grain is against you and the ball will run more slowly.
If it looks neither shiny nor dull, look at it from the side to look for a cross grain and adjust your putt accordingly.
