Simplify Your Pre-shot Routine

Long, complex pre-shot routines not only delay play for the golfers waiting behind you, but they are also unnecessary and unproductive for the average golfer. There is no need for the normal amateur to consult yardage books, or take a dozen practice swings, or stand over a shot staring at it for minutes at a time. Such behavior slows play tremendously.

To simplify your routine, get in the habit of using the following steps:

  1. Make one, easy, relaxed practice swing. Just one.
  2. Look at the target.
  3. Step up and address the ball.
  4. Plant your left foot.
  5. Plant your right foot.
  6. Take another look at the target.
  7. Swing.

The whole routine should take no more than 30 seconds, from start to finish. Those behind you will be very appreciative.
