Graduate of Golf Academy of America in San Diego
Head Golf Professional
Current Employer: Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California
Iowa-born Michael block says his current role as a Head Golf Professional in Southern California is a dream come true. The PGA Professional leads instruction at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo.
Before choosing a career in golf, Block says it’s important to examine your personality. "You can have all of the business, technology, merchandising, teaching and playing skills you want, but without people skills, you will have a very difficult time moving forward in the industry," says Block.
Beyond his natural ability to relate to people, Block’s education at the Golf Academy of America in San Diego played a key role in landing his current position. "The GAA groomed me in every aspect of the business," says Block. "It taught me that there are multiple avenues in the golf industry that I could go down, and it led me to my current role."
He advises students to, "try as hard as you can to have as many positions at a golf course as possible. Start on the driving range, then move up to an outside service position and then into the golf shop. This is the only way that you will be able to really understand your employees and what is needed on a daily basis. You will end up being a much better manager if you have actually done the job yourself in the past."

Best part of his job: "Being able to be a part of every aspect of the golf business is what I love most about my job as a Head Golf Professional. I never get bored with my job because I never have the same day. I'm never in the same area at the club for more than a couple of hours, because I'm either in meetings, my office, on the driving range teaching or working with other employees at finding better ways to run the club and make sure our customers are always happy with their experience."
