Rick Valentine

Graduate of Golf Academy of America in San Diego

Director of Golf

Current Employer: Loretto Golf School in Edinburgh, Scotland

PGA Member Rick Valentine doesn’t have your average golf job. The Golf Academy of America in San Diego graduate is Director of Golf at Loretto Golf School, part of a boarding and day school for boys and girls in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Valentine was born in Dubai, raised in England, and has degrees in Sports Science, Sports Coaching and Professional Golf Studies. He played amateur golf in Hong Kong for three years and played a season on the EuroPro Tour.

“The key to my personal development has been an unquenchable thirst for knowledge,” says Valentine. “The more I know, the more I realise I don't know, and this has driven me on to continue in education almost full time throughout my career recently completing my Master of Science in Sports Coaching from the University of Birmingham.”

He encourages Golf Academy of America students to seek a well-rounded education. “Even if you have an interest in a specific area such as coaching, don't allow yourself to neglect the other key areas of learning at GAA,” says Valentine. “You never know what the future holds and so ensure you grasp your opportunity and develop your knowledge as much as possible across all the different areas.”

Best part of his job: “My favourite part of the job is always working directly with the players. Helping them achieve their goals through development in all areas technical, physical, tactical, mental but probably most important managing their school, sport and social balance to ensure they get the most out of their time with us.”
