Director of Golf

Current Employer: Loretto School in Edinburgh, Scotland

PGA Member Rick Valentine doesn’t have your average golf job. The Golf Academy of America in San Diego graduate is Director of Golf at Loretto Golf Academy, part of a boarding and day school for boys and girls in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Valentine was born in Dubai, raised in England, and has degrees in Sports Science, Sports Coaching and Professional Golf Studies. He played amateur golf in Hong Kong for three years, and played a season on the EuroPro Tour.

"One of the biggest advantages of studying at GAA was the opportunity to get a grounding in all areas of the golf business," says Valentine. "This broad knowledge base has allowed me to develop my knowledge in key areas whilst still understanding how all parts of the business work together."

Valentine encourages Golf Academy of America students to embrace learning and development. "I believe the more you know, the more you realize you don't know," he says. "I constantly challenge myself to develop my knowledge through formal and informal learning opportunities. There are always people happy to pass on their knowledge, so seek them out and learn from them."

  • What's in His Bag? Titleist
  • Golf Ball of Choice: Titleist
  • Best part of his job: "The best part of my job is having the opportunity to develop programs and structures to allow golfers of all abilities to develop their game. I am lucky to be able to work with a broad range of players from beginners to international golfers, and it is a constant challenge to devise methods to keep players engaged and having fun, allowing them to reach their goals."
