Do the Golfsmith club series named Snake Eyes, Lynx, Killer Bee or Vevo mean anything to you? Jeff Sheets, a class of '88 Golf Academy grad and one of the world's top club fitters, is responsible for more than 250 clubhead designs.

Golf is a game of precision, yet only a small percentage of today’s players take to the course with properly fitted equipment. According to Alan Flashner, Director of Career Services at Golf Academy of America in Orlando, clubs sold “off the rack” often lead to poor results.
These players “leave golf for other activities offering instant gratification,” said Flashner. “Properly fitted product reverses that action, leading to an increase in golf activity.” That’s where custom club fitters come in.
What Do Club Fitters Do?
Golf club fitters have a passion for education and helping pros and amateurs improve their game. They work one-on-one with a client to build personalized equipment, taking size, strength and athletic ability into consideration. Good club fitters grasp the physics of a golf swing. They conduct swing evaluations using the V1 system, or something similar. Club fitters have an understanding of swing plane dynamics in regards to the recommended lie angle, which is obtained from lie board evaluations.
With all these tools in hand, custom club fitters match length, lie angle, shaft flex, loft, head design grip, face angles, swing weight and total weight of clubs to each user. They have mastered the fitting systems offered by various vendors, including Taylor Made, Mizuno, Titleist and Callaway, and can build the perfect equipment to enhance an individual’s game.
This specialized knowledge can be obtained at Golf Academy of America, in the Club Fitting track. “This background of information and hands on experience separates Golf Academy grads from others,” Flashner said. “The individual who has this knowledge and experience would be a bonus to any golf staff, be it at a club, a learning center, teaching academy, or standalone off course golf retail store. With recognition of their skills these ‘fitters’ often become sought after and develop a cliental that only increases with time!”
