Don Law - GAA Graduate
Oct 11, 2012
Don Law has been named the 2011 SFPGA Golf Professional of the Year. This award is the highest honor a PGA Professional can receive, recognizing the individual for their overall performance, level of service to the Association, leadership, image, and the ability to inspire fellow professionals and promote the game of golf.
No stranger to receiving awards at the Chapter and Section level, Don has previously been recognized as the Section's Junior Golf Leader last year, as well as 2001 and 2007 and the Southeast Chapter Junior Golf Leader in 2001 and 2008. Additional accolades include: Bill Strausbaugh Award (Section: '06, Chapter '05), Southeast Chapter Golf Professional of the Year ('07 & '08); the Southeast Chapter Distinguished Service Award ('06); President's Council ('05-'08); US Kids Golf Top 50 Instructor ('04-'07); US Kids Golf Top 50 Master Junior Instructor ('08); as well as being a National Junior Golf Leader finalist for the PGA of America in 2009 and 2010.
A PGA member since 1993, Don Law has been the Junior Chairperson for the South Florida Section for the past 9 years and the Southeast Chapter Chair two years prior to taking the leadership role at the Section level. In that role, he is actively involved in sponsoring and conducting the SFPGA Junior Tour which runs 18 36-hole events per year. He serves as a liaison between the PGA and Palm Beach County School System in developing programs to integrate PGA golf instruction in middle schools, hosts the Dennis Walters Clinic ('06-'09), initiated and hosts the Southeast Junior Golf Day ('01-'07), founded the first South Florida Junior Golf Expo and Merchandise Show, hosted the Section's first college seminar for juniors, and participates in several PGA Growth of the Game initiatives throughout the year. In all, Don donated over 300 hours to junior golf in the past year, in addition to overseeing two year-round programs with over 1,500 juniors participating in various activities.
"I feel the PGA fulfills the role of steward in the game of golf," says Don. "Thousands of people start learning the game due to the influence of their PGA Professional. I've been privileged to not only get juniors started with the game but to guide them through competitive golf and even further to college scholarships. I want to be a friend and mentor to each and every junior. Promoting golf to juniors is not just my job but my passion in life."
Don's leadership is demonstrated through his passion for the game and in the way that he leads by example, encourages, teaches and trains. He leads a staff that generously donates their time to Chapter, Section and National events and to other charitable causes. His leadership has resulted in several of his own staff members serving on Chapter and Section boards, and Don always makes time to meet and share his knowledge and experiences with other PGA Professionals interested in starting up their own junior programs.
Don says, "I try to always conduct myself with honor and integrity in everything I do. I lead by example. I encourage my staff and juniors to love golf. And I don't just teach it, I live it."
One of Don's recent accomplishments within the South Florida PGA Section was filming a commercial for the Cartoon Network for junior golf. The commercial was filmed by Turner Broadcasting and shown on Cartoon Network. "I took great pride and enjoyment in watching the juniors that have grown up in our programs have the best time filming this commercial. They truly love golf and it showed," says Don.
Don Law, along with the ten (10) other South Florida PGA Annual Award winners, will be recognized at the SFPGA Awards Night November 8th at Parkland Golf and Country Club.
